The New York Islanders have signed forward Simon Holmstrom to a three-year entry-level contract. The Swedish forward was selected 23rd overall by the Islanders in last month's draft.

Holmstrom was a bit of a surprise selection, ranked by many to go in the second round. Still, he'll help to fill a need for the Islanders up front, though he's likely still a couple years away from the NHL. Holmstrom battled injuries this year and is likely to either return to Sweden next season or play for the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
