I like this trade for both sides.
Washington could use a little more firepower in their bottom-6 and on the 2nd power play unit. Ilya Kovalchuk has shown in recent weeks he can still produce at a solid rate while holding his own in terms of play driving ability.
This is the perfect situation to walk into for him. He joins a lot of his Team Russia friends, has a legitimate shot at a Stanley Cup, and he’ll be fully motivated personally to play his way into a better contract a few months from now.
This makes a lot of sense for Montreal as well. They landed a 3rd round pick for somebody they brought in for nothing just a couple of months ago. The Canadiens already have a ton of draft choices but this is just more ammo for them to convert into a player that can help.
And who is to say the Canadiens don’t circle back to Kovalchuk in the summer? They helped revitalize his career and then traded him to perhaps the best possible landing spot. He surely appreciates that and would welcome a reunion if the money is right.
The Kovalchuk trade is a stroke of brilliance by Marc Bergevin. He takes a UFA and flips him into a 3rd over just a couple of weeks. As for Washington, also a great add. Even if you just used him on the 4th line and PP he'd be better than most 4th liners in the NHL. This is a rare great move for both teams
