Update - Gustav Lindstrom signed for 2 years. It was interesting that he was protected over Cholowski. Lindstrom is a defensive Dman. He’s not waiver exempt and so will start the year in Detroit. As the 4th right shot Dman on the roster, I have to think that he will either play the left side on the third pairing (alternating with Dekeyser) or sit as the 7th Dman. The 6’2” Lindstrom plays a physical game that may not show up on the score sheet. If he can add a step to his skating, it would be a credit to his game. Update - deal is for 850K - 750 the first year and 950 the second year

Marc Staal will be back next year, with a 2 million dollar deal. In waiting for news of signings and qualifiers today, it seems that Svechnikov will not be given his qualifying offer. This doesn’t mean Yzerman doesn’t intend to sign him at this point, just that it would possibly be less than the qualifying amount. It sounds like Detroit is open to a low dollar 2 way deal. Svechnikov would have to go on waivers if he signed that and make significantly less in the minor leagues. This could well be the beginning of the end.

With Cholowski going to Seattle, Svechnikov was the current low performing first round pick. Mantha was traded for Vrana, and so the only first round picks playing for Yzerman right now as holdovers from Holland are Larkin and Zadina. Veleno could join those ranks, but it’s strange to see all other top picks gone from the organization.

Mlive got the following quote for Todd Diamond, Svechnikov’s agent:

“We’ll see what things look like (in the market) and regroup from there,” Diamond said. “It’s been a while (for Svechnikov in the organization), he’s had a lot of injuries. He could have gotten a new opportunity last season. He played hurt. It didn’t happen.

“Maybe it’ll work out for the best and he’ll get a chance to compete with another team.”

More to come on this..
