I posted “The Winged Wheel season 3, ep 1” and soon after Tyler Bertuzzi was signed for 2 years. I went ahead and added it to the post. Detroit still has a few signings, the most “important” being Filip Hronek, Jakub Vrana and Adam Erne. The latter two have filed for arbitration.

I don’t really panic on these things. Just puts a “deadline” on negotiations. Erne is coming off of his highest goal total (11) in his career. This was achieved in 45 games. His previous high of 7 goals was achieved in 65 games. His salary last year was $997,500. Obviously Erne is looking for a raise. I still expect a fairly reasonable deal for a player who’s only eclipsed 10 goals once in his career. Erne projected higher, as it was a shortened season. Still, it remains to be seen if last year was the beginning of an upswing in production or signs of a player who is finding his footing.

Vrana is coming off of a 3.35 million dollar deal. He scored 19 goals in 50 games (8 of those in just 11 games after he was dealt to Detroit). He’s scored 24 and 25 goals in the past. Vrana was on a tear and scored on almost half of the shots he took when he got here. He may be looking for something like the contract that Mantha signed (5.7 x 4) who scored 15 goals last year. Vrana will be getting more minutes in Detroit, and his agency may argue that the bump could have him breaking 30 goals. If it goes to arbitration, I expect a 1 or 2 year deal at between 4.5 and 5.0 million (depending on the ask of the player vs the team.

I’d be comfortable on a 1 or 2 year deal for Vrana. If his production explodes, go ahead and earn the raise. It could put him in the 6m+ range for his extension. Yzerman just seems to be in the mood to do shorter term deals at this point. If the club locks up Vrana for 4+ years, I’m good with that too. It would mean that Yzerman feels good about the player as a longer term fit. Let me know your thoughts, where you think each player will land.
