Said it Before, Will Say it Again. Give me Matthews over McDavid.

Every year I make some “whacky” predictions and one of the ones I took the most heat for this year was that Auston Matthews would score 65 goals. Matthews is on pace now for 63 in 77 games. Had he played all 84 games 65 would have been no biggie…

And its not just the goals.

Matthews is playing like a player on a mission. These Leafs still have holes for sure, but Matthews isn’t one of them. He is using his size in a smart way and he never gives up on a puck. NEVER.

In my opinion, one quality of a “superstar player” is when a player shows some skill that maybe 5 players in the history of the game could match. Matthew has that. He has one thing that he can do better than almost any other player who has EVER played the game…Receive a pass.

Matthews can receive a pass better than any player I’ve ever seen. This allows his teammates a TON of freedom…The know they don’t have to worry about putting too fine of a bow on a pass heading Auston’s way. Just put it in his basic area…throw it fast or slow, high or low, if front of his stride or behind his stride…Doesn’t much matter…Chances are Matthews will get that puck and if its in the offensive zone he will get that puck and turn that puck on net.

Both Matthews and McDavid make players around them better nit Auston has become sneaky great in the defensive zone. He is way ahead of McDavid in his own end…and often times he can even start the rush up ice by breaking up the opposing team’s rush, coming up with the loose puck and making the kind of transitional pass usually reserved for only the best puck moving D-men…

McDavid’s super powers are well documented as well. McDavid plays the game faster than any player to have ever lived. Hands down. And his stick handling skills along with his instinct as to when to exhibit the “McDavid Gear” is a huge part of what makes him so dangerous.

So who would I rather have on my team?

I’ve said it previously, and I still feel the same..I would still take Matthews…. Not that there is a wrong answer here. Both are flat out special payers the hockey Gods have truly blessed us with.. I grew up in The Gretzky/Lemieux Era. Then there was the Yzerman/Sakic Era. Then came the Crosby/Ovechkin Era….. But the era we are in now….McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon…May be even better than the Crosby/Ovechkin era…

What say you?

Who do you think is better: McDavid or Matthews?
