Even though the Canadiens are currently in the midst of a very long offseason thanks to finishing dead last in the standings, they are still ridding high on getting the first overall pick at the draft and in readiness of the upcoming season they announced which numbers new and old Habs will be wearing.
It may not seem worthy of reporting to you, but there’s an interesting angle to this news. New Habs Mike Matheson will be donning number 8 which was vacated when Ben Chiarot was traded last season, Evgeni Dadonov will wear number 63, last worn by Matthew Peca in 2019-2020 and Kirby Dach will stick to the 77 he wore both in junior and for the Hawks.
As for Juraj Slafkovsky, he’ll have number 20 just like with TPS Turku since Chris Wideman offered to vacate the number. That right there is yet another sign that Wideman is aware of his role with this team, he’s a depth defenseman who’s there to be a bit of a mentor and a leader. Offering his number to the rookie just goes to show how much of a team player he is, and no one asked him to do it either. I spoke to Wideman as the draft when he had a signing session at the Upper Deck booth and when I asked if he was worried that he might lose his number, he replied: “Of course not, I offered it to Juraj already”.
When he signed his 2-year contract extension, the veteran said he wanted to be part of what the new Habs brass is building, that he felt like this is where he belongs and that the role he played last year suited him just fine. Now that former captain Shea Weber’s been traded, he’ll be able to get the number 6 he wore in Ottawa back as well.
While there might be no reason to rush Slafkovsky’s development by bringing him to the NHL right away, it sure looks like the Canadiens are ready to put him on the roster. As far as I can remember, it’s the first time that a rookie who hasn’t even made the team is on the team’s roster on its application. I’ll admit that I’m looking forward to seeing Slafkovsky take his first strides in the big league, I hope he won’t be asked right away to play top-line minutes and carry the team on his shoulders, because that, would be a mistake.

Peut-être que vous ne considérez pas que ça vaut la peine d’être rapporté comme information, mais il y a tout de même un angle intéressant à cette nouvelle. Le nouvel arrière Mike Matheson portera la chandail numéro 8 laissé vacant par le départ de Ben Chiarot, Evgeni Dadonov arborera quant à lui le 63, Matthew Peca ayant été le dernier à le revêtir en 2019-2020 alors que Kirby Dach s’en tiendra au numéro qu’il avait dans le junior et avec les Hawks, le 77.
Quant à Juraj Slafkovsky, il aura le numéro 20 tout comme avec le TPS Turku l’an dernier puisque Chris Wideman a offert de le lui laisser. Il s’agit là d’un autre signe que Wideman connait et accepte son rôle avec l’équipe, il est un défenseur de profondeur qui est là pour être un mentor et un leader. Le fait d’offrir son numéro à la verte recrue est une autre preuve qu’il est un joueur d’équipe, et personne n’a eu besoin de lui demander de faire ce sacrifice non plus. J’ai parlé à Wideman lors de sa séance de signature au kiosque d’Upper Deck au repêchage et quand je lui ai demandé s’il craignait de devoir céder son numéro au premier choix, il m’a immédiatement répondu : « Bien sûr que non, je l’ai déjà offert à Juraj ».
Quand il a signé sa prolongation de contrat de 2 ans, le vétéran a dit qu’il voulait faire partie de ce que le nouvel état-major est en train de bâtir, qu’il avait l’impression d’être à sa place et que le rôle qu’il avait joué l’an dernier lui convenait très bien. Maintenant que l’ancien capitaine Shae Weber a été échangé, il pourra reprendre le numéro 6 qu’il portait jadis à Ottawa.
Bien qu’il n’y ait aucune raison de brusquer le développement de Wideman en l’amenant immédiatement dans le circuit Bettman, on dirait bien que le CH est déjà prêt à le mettre dans l’alignement. Autant que je puisse me rappeler c’est la première fois qu’une recrue qui n’a pas encore fait l’équipe se retrouve dans l’alignement sur l’application de l’équipe. Je l’admets, j’ai hâte de voir Slafkovsky prendre ses premiers coups de patins dans la grande ligne, j’espère qu’on ne lui demandera pas immédiatement de jouer sur le premier trio et de transporter l’équipe sur ses épaules, parce que ça, ce serait une erreur.
