Wrap: Flyers Dismantle Dallas, 5-1
The Philadelphia Flyers (25-14-6) ran their winning streak to five games as they opened a four-game homestand with a dominating 5-1 victory over a very good Dallas Stars (26-13-5) team at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday evening. The Flyers were excellent in virtually every phase of the game -- forechecking, breakouts, offense off the rush, gap control and shot suppression -- to produce an even more impressive overall performance than Saturday's 2-0 road victory that ended the Winnipeg Jets' eight-game winning streak.
The Flyers played with outstanding energy nearly the whole game. Apart from a Dallas 2-on-1 on the game's first shift, a point-blank chance two shifts later, and a brief Stars run in the second period (a strong penalty kill by Dallas, a Stars goal off a turnover, and several successive attacking shifts), nearly the whole game belonged to the Flyers.
Along the way, the Flyers got two more goals from the scorching hot Owen Tippett (17th and 18th), even strength and power play primary assists from Morgan Frost (including a between-the-legs touch pass on Philly's first goal), an even strength goal by Sean Walker (5th), a power play slam dunk by Cam Atkinson (11th) and a penalty shot goal by Scott Laughton (5th).
The Flyers outshot the Stars by a 14-1 margin in the first period. The shot disparity was 27-3 in Philly's favor before Tyler Seguin (17th goal of the season) temporarily cut a 2-0 Flyers lead down to a single goal. For the game, the Flyers enjoyed a 43-15 shot on goal edge and a 13-5 advantage in high-danger chances against one of the NHL's highest-scoring teams.
Samuel Ersson stopped 14 of 15 shots to earn the win. In a losing cause, Jake Oettinger turned aside 38 of 43 shots with his net under bombardment all night. The Flyers went 1-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
The most memorable play of the game was the second Tippett goal on the final tally of the game. Tippett had a spectacular solo rush, capped off by a spin-o-rama and an unstoppable backhander upstairs. No goal was going to stop this one.
