The Penguins dropped their Friday night contest to the Dallas Stars by a score of 4-2. Not a surprising result given the Stars are tied with the Colorado Avalanche for the division lead and the Penguins, well, they are what they are at the moment.
I do want to speak to the addition of Michael Bunting. I think he will be a nice fit with the team. His style of play is something the Penguins don’t have a ton of and he will be effective. My hangup with him in the trade is that I think Dubas considered him one of the focal points of the trade which dragged down the value in the other parts. That’s not on Michael Bunting and he has no control over that. Through eight games he has a CF% of 56.13 and an xGF% of 55.10%. He has added three goals and three assists. A good start to his Penguins tenure.
The guy he was traded for has had a rough start to things considering he is just a product of Sidney Cro... oh wait, no he’s not, Jake is great and is doing great with Carolina. It shouldn’t be a real surprise to anyone. He’s one of the smarter players in the entire league. He can play with any skilled players and make a go of it.
I don’t think it is probable, but I would like the Penguins to engage with his camp if he hits the free market after the season.
The Penguins losing isn’t an issue at this point in time. Sidney Crosby failing to record a point is. Crosby went pointless against Dallas and now has 69 points in 69 games. He’s cutting it real close on the point per game front. I’d say he has his hands full tomorrow against Colorado, but considering it is a game against his buddy Nate MacKinnon I think you’ll see his best. Perhaps even a multi-point game.
It is a lost season. There are still some bright moments. Jack St. Ivany making his NHL debut is a nice positive to have during a stretch like this.
