Quick Hits: June 1, 2024

1) The 2024 Memorial Cup champion is guaranteed to be a team from the Ontario Hockey League. Whether it will be the OHL champion London Knights or the tournament host Saginaw Spirit will be determined on Sunday evening in Saginaw.

In the semifinal game on Friday, the Spirit (3-1-0) dismantled the Western Hockey League champion Moose Jaw Warriors (2-2-0) in a 7-1 blowout. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Drummondville Voltigeurs were eliminated after going winless (0-3-0) in the round robin phase of the tournament. Flyers wing prospect Alexis Gendron finished with one point (1g, 0a) in three games. Gendron's 18 shots on goal lead all players in the tournament.

Flyers defense prospect Oliver Bonk has recorded at least one point in all three games London has played to date (1g, 3a). Fellow Flyers prospect Denver Barkey did not record a point in London's tournament opener against Drummondville but then posted four points (1g, 3a) in the next two games.

2) The 2024 NHL Combine gets underway on Monday in Buffalo. For a preview of this year's event, and a look back at which Flyers draftees attended last year's combine, there will be an upcoming article on PhiladelphiaFlyers.com tomorrow.

3) Today in Flyers History: June 1

1999: The Flyers trade winger Pat Kavanagh to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 1999 sixth-round draft pick (Konstantin Rudenko).

2011: The Flyers trade winger Kris Versteeg to the Florida Panthers for a 2012 second-round pick (later traded to Tampa Bay in the Pavel Kubina deal) and a 2012 third-round pick (Shayne Gostisbehere).

4) Current Phantoms/Flyers center/winger Tanner Laczynski celebrates his 27th birthday today. Laczynski missed significant time with injuries this past season but was arguably the Phantoms most consistent all-around forward in his 49 regular season games (17 goals, 27 assists, 44 points, plus-12) and six Calder Cup playoff games (four goals).

The previous year, Laczynski spent most of the campaign in the NHL but did not impress head coach John Tortorella enough to earn a regular lineup spot. He appeared in 32 games, mostly seeing fourth-line usage.

5) June 1 Flyers Alumni birthdays: Paul Coffey (1961), Murray Baron (1967), Jeff Hackett (1968), David Laliberte (1986), Eric Meloche (1976), Dan Quinn (1965), Larry Zeidel (1928-2014).
