Every now and again, there’s a pinch of how much the opportunity to blog about and now do youtube hits about the Detroit Red Wings. Today was a day that was an absolute reminder that the Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins are classy organizations, and provide opportunities to get to know more about the upcoming players. Today, I had the honor of talking to Shai Buium.
#CLEvsGR | This might seem like a nothing play, but I love the effort from Shai Buium here to keep his man away from a loose puck and get it away from danger
Seeing your young defenseman making plays like this just a few months into their pro careers is a great sign for success pic.twitter.com/PbyCn9qPut
Full disclosure, I know the Grand Rapids faithful and had some back and forth with a someone whose eye for the game I admire and trust. Shai has 15 assists on the year and is finding teammates with passes, making plays that seem understated at the time, and continuing to grow. The 2021 class seems special. Edvinsson, Cossa, Buium, Mazur, Savage, Liam Dower Nilsson all seem to be working hard to move forward.
In the interview, even with 2 NCAA championships, it’s a day at a time as Shai looks toward the future with a strong work ethic and a humility that feels like a throw back. Coach Watson has been very good for the team in Grand Rapids, and Shai’s attitude is perfect for what the coach is doing.
A 6’3” left shot that can find teammates and make plays to help the goalie is a welcome part of the pipeline. We know what’s coming in ASP, Buium is a prospect that I hope to see get some games in a red sweater this year.
We talked development, future “man cave” decorations, and even current stick flex. Again, a big thank you to Shai as well as Grand Rapids. It’s nearly impossible to shed enough light on what is happening on the west side. This is my favorite iteration of the group since Nyquist/Tatar and it feels like this group is deeper on the blue line with Cossa able to turn it on in net.
