Why in the world would the Leafs chose Rantanen over Marner? |

I really need someone to explain this to me.
I’ve asked around and a lot of people in the league ALSO don’t understand it as well.
The Maple Leafs were willing to give up Mitch Marner to get Rantanen…. And then put a salary extension on which would be about the same amount of money for both players.
The Leafs would’ve rather gone with a player/person they didn’t know…. who had just played terribly for a while in Carolina…..then their own player….who has been there for them throughout and is obviously a player who makes players around him better…..Which Rantanen clearly doesn’t.
So at the end of all this, the damage has been done. Now the Leafs will either have to give Marner more money to keep him, or they will lose him for nothing at all… Before this, everyone knew that he wanted to stay in Toronto, but now….. does he still?
