In the 2004 2004 the first player taken overall was Alexandar Ovechkin. In 2005 the first player taken overall with Sidney Crosby. And the two of them have been linked ever since. In this league.

In 2023 Conor Bedard went first overall, and many felt that had Matvei Michov not been contractually obligated to in Russia for a few years he would have been the second player picked.
