For many fans this is a day that has been a long time coming: Joe Sacco has been fired.
After missing the playoffs for the three straight years and only making the playoffs once, Sacco has been relieved of his coaching duties.
The announcement was made by Greg Sherman, a possible indication that he may keep his job a general manager. Sherman and the Avs' management will now embark on the path to redemption for the Colorado Avalanche, starting with a new head coach.
Likely names to be included in the search are Guy Boucher, Lindy Ruff, formerly of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres, respectively. Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins could be considered, as could former Avs goaltender Patrick Roy.
Sacco will now have the awkward pleasure of coaching former teammates Paul Stastny, Erik Johnson, Matt Hunwick and Aaron Palushaj- all playing for the United States in the World Championships.
