With the first overall selection, the Colorado Avalanche select...
For two years in a row, the second to last place team has won the draft lottery and this year it will be the Colorado Avalanche.
The Avs are now in prime position to draft defenseman Seth Jones, the player who learned hockey from Colorado. Jones, the 6'4 205 pound defenseman, finished the year as the top-ranked skater from North America. Possessing size, range, skating and a heavy shot, Jones is pegged to be a franchise defenseman for an Avs team that finished 26th in goal against this year.
Other names that could be called during the draft are Halifax Mooseheads forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Druin. Both are going to be franchise players but considering the lineage, potential and fit of Jones, it is most likely that the Avs will draft him.
One day after firing coach Joe Sacco, the Avs appear to have hit gold in the NHL draft, which will be in New Jersey on June 30, just over two months away.
