It's looking more and more like Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller will be starting the season in Buffalo. Did Regier wait too long? I believe so.
I think the Sabres lost out on trading them simply because many other teams acquired a starting goaltender.

Whether Regier was asking too much for them, or couldn't obtain the right pieces he wanted, the Sabres have waited too long and may have lost the opportunity to get what they wanted for those guys.

Of course, there still is a chance that Regier can make something happen, but it appears that nothing will happen, at least right now. Besides that, I think another trade is in order as well, involving Stafford and a defenseman or two.

While it's not certain that Miller and Vanek will be here come October, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

"We've had some discussions regarding both those players. Obviously they're here and they're part of our organization. Nothing's changed in that regard." -Darcy Regier

Regardless of what happens, I think it would make things much easier if the Sabres could just decide what they're going to do and let the players know, but I doubt that happens. If Regier doesn't trade them by training camp, that does leave the Sabres with a few options.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Miller and Vanek play here for another season. The two of them have the ability to play with such talent, but do they belong on a rebuilding team?

If they do start the season in Buffalo, that brings up the possibility of them being traded at the deadline, possibly even re-signed, or a combination of both.

"The cap is a real big part of it. Any discussions that I have now involve taking back money, moving money. Money plays a very big role," Regier said. "I think you can look at clubs you wouldn't expect to be up and around $60-million-plus and they're there."

I'd still like a trade to happen, even if Buffalo has to cut its' losses and trade away Miller. Having them here wouldn't hurt. Many are already predicting a dreadful season for the Sabres and I can understand why.

If Miller and Vanek were to stay, what would the thoughts be then? How much of a difference can #26 and #30 make this season if they do not get traded?

Over the next couple of days, I will be completing my list of the top 20 all-time Sabres. Here's what I have so far:

20. Chris Drury
19. Daniel Briere
18. Dale Hawerchuk
17. Jim Schoenfeld
16. Bill Hajt
15. Ryan Miller
14. Don Luce
13. Thomas Vanek
12. Mike Foligno
11. Phil Housley

Look for me to post the next part tomorrow.

As always, thank you for reading!
