What could be better than an unfairly maligned player returning to the arena of the team that drafted him to score the tying goal and send the game to overtime?
I couldn't tell you, because the NHL is stupid.
Alex Galchenyuk tied up the game on the power-play but the puck came over the blue line , slightly, about 30 seconds earlier, and so the goal was called off.
This is pathetic.
The NHL needs their games to be fun, not stalled and ruined by video replay.
I've been saying this for years: the obsession with getting every call perfect is idiotic.
Unless you think the referees are biased or cheating, every team would sometimes benefit and sometimes get screwed by a bad call. But at least it evens out and at least a human is doing it, and at least you don't have to pause the goddamn game for ten minutes after every goal.
There is no benefit to the current replay system.
Well at least they get the calls right, you say?
Wrong.
Any advantage gained by going offside is lost 30 seconds later.
And, several times per game a linesman might miss an offside call, but they only review them on actual goals.
Besides, if you need a freeze frame computer to tell you if a play is offside, then it's not within the spirit of the rule. A fractional offside really gives no one an advantage. The puck still has to be put on net, the players aren't more or less ready for the next play based on slight bit of being offside.
This rule was instituted because Matt Duchene once scored a goal while ten feet offside. Not to take a fair goal away from a team based on a technicality.
It's so stupid.
Essentially, the Coyotes could end up missing the playoffs because of an overtly anal, pedantic offside call that virtually everyone involved in the entire league agrees is dumb and that the goal should count.
There is no benefit to this rule, only disadvantages.
It is so stupid that video review for offside should be canceled right now. In the middle of the season.
Here is a pathetic quote from the Habs coach via TSN.ca
"Every time the puck crosses the blue line, they check the replay," he said. "Good work on their part. They deserve all the credit because I didn't see it. They said it was offside and they showed it to me. That saved us."
Really? That's what you want to talk about post-game? That's how you want to win?
Disgusting.
Pathetic.
Embarrassing.
Not as embarrassing as Bob Nicholson keeping his job, but comparably stupid.
