The Anaheim Ducks continue to hit new lows in a season of many. Despite the returns of Corey Perry, Patrick Eaves and Jakob Silfverberg to the line-up, the Winnipeg Jets skated donuts around the Ducks in a 9-3 blowout victory in the "Peg."
"Well, it’s about time they got their act together. They’re ruining the whole league. They better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on the ice."
Famous words from Wayne Gretzky, following a 13-4 Edmonton Oilers beat down on the New Jersey Devils in 1984. It was the first thing that came to my mind a I watched Saturday night's game unfold.
The Jets scored a franchise-record six goals in the first period, chasing Ducks' starter John Gibson after he allowed six goals on 14 shots.
Jack Roslovic had a hat trick, with three goals coming via the power-play and he added an assist for good measure. Bryan Little scored twice, Andrew Copp, Blake Wheeler, Brendan Lemieux and Tyler Myers also had goals for the Jets.
Winnipeg has incredible fire-power, but none of the goals came from the big guns of Mark Scheifele and Patrick Laine. It was a whooping of epic proportions.
As impressive as the Jets were in winning their third consecutive game, the Ducks were just that bad. The first period was a nightmare and exposed a team that has seemingly quite on the coach and sadly, their own goalies.
Gibson was the victim of terrible, no good, non-existent defense for the second time in a week. The first time was in the All-Star game and now in a game that mattered with the Ducks trying to stay alive in the playoff chase. At this point, does that even matter?
I went back to watch each and every goal so I could definitively say that I saw no movement, no anticipation and no fight in the Ducks defense. It was as poor a performance as I've seen in the regular season in a very, very long time.
The only really bright spot in the game was Daniel Sprong, who scored his 9th goal in 23 games with Anaheim. Otherwise the game was a total wash. I only watched until the very end to see if Winnipeg to could hit double-digits.
Now what?
Anaheim is 2-11-5 since December 17th and show no signs of improvement, even as they start to get healthy. Is the season already over? The Ducks sure are playing like it.
The internet is ablaze with the call for Randy Carlyle's job and Bob Murray for that matter. The noise is deafening. How long before the torches and pitchforks are lining up outside the house that
Mickey Mouse built?
