The Anaheim Ducks picked up a 2-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres tonight, improving to a 14-8-5 record this season.
There weren’t a ton of great chances exchanged in the first period and it was a relatively even frame overall. Shots were just 7-6 in favour of the Sabres and the game remained scoreless heading into the intermission.
The most notable moment of the game came as the Ducks opened the scoring in the second period, with Trevor Zegras flipping the puck over the net to Sonny Milano, who batted it in out of mid air.
That's one of the most outstanding assists I've seen in a long time and I'm sure we'll see that replayed over and over.
The team had a really strong period after that, outshooting the Sabres 9-3 in the frame and kept the lead heading into the third period.
The Sabres really pressed in the final frame and sustained a ton of pressure midway through the period on a power play. They generated some good chances but Anthony Stolarz made some big saves to keep the lead. Despite being outplayed and outshot in the frame, the Ducks secured the win with a goal from Sam Carrick with just over two minutes to go, as he tipped in a point shot from Josh Manson.
Stolarz certainly had to earn his shutout and performed well in the win. He faced 15 shots in the third period alone and deserves a lot of credit.
That said, the Ducks were the better team through the first 40 minutes and had limited the Sabres to just 10 shots heading into the final frame. The chemistry between Trevor Zegras and Sonny Milano was on full display and apart from the ridiculous goal, their line continued to be the team’s best.
It's worth noting that Vinni Lettieri has been a really solid addition to the lineup as well. He’s taking advantage of his opportunity with the string of injuries to the forward group and while he didn’t get on the scoresheet tonight, he’s continued to be very involved.
The Ducks are off to a strong start on their road trip and this was a solid win, especially considering it came on the second half of a back-to-back. The Ducks will continue their road trip against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.
