The Anaheim Ducks suffered a blowout loss against the Edmonton Oilers yesterday, falling 6-1.

The Oilers struck first, with Tyson Barrie’s point shot finding a way through traffic and in. Then a few minutes later, Connor McDavid ripped a shot past John Gibson on a power play, making it a 2-0 game. Edmonton wasn’t done there though, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins picking a corner to beat a screened Gibson, as Edmonton took a three-goal lead into the intermission.

While the Ducks did have a slightly better second period, Jesse Puljujarvi still extended the Oilers’ lead once again, beating Max Comtois to a loose puck in front to roof the puck over John Gibson. While Zach Aston-Reese got the Ducks on the board in the third period, goals from Brett Kulak and Leon Draisaitl secured a 6-1 Oilers win.

It’s the Ducks’ 12th loss over their last 13 games, as they still sit 13th in the Western Conference in points percentage. Anaheim has actually been the worst team in the NHL since the All-Star Break with just a .283 points percentage and winning only five of 23 games in that time.

At this point, the Ducks only have 11 games left but it feels like we’re really crawling to the finish line. After an unexpectedly strong start, it’s been a disastrous couple of months and though we expected Anaheim to be right around where they are in the standings now, it’s how far they fell to get there that’s unfortunate.

Anaheim’s next game comes on Wednesday against the Calgary Flames.
