The Los Angeles Kings picked up a 4-1 over the Florida Panthers last night, marking their fourth game in a row without a regulation loss (3-0-1 in that time).
The Panthers got some great chances in the first period, both at even strength and on the power play, but Jonathan Quick made some key saves. They would still manage to open the scoring though, as Matt Kiersted took a pass from Jonathan Huberdeau and went to the backhand, beating Quick for his first NHL goal. The Kings responded before the end of the frame though, as Olli Maatta threw a puck in front and it deflected in off MacKenzie Weegar’s skate and in to tie the game.
In the second period, Sean Durzi sprung Anze Kopitar on a rush, and Kopitar was able to beat Sergei Bobrovsky with a nice backhand shot to put the Kings up by a goal. Then later in the frame, Dustin Brown increased the lead to 3-1 on a great individual effort, getting in alone and beating Bobrovsky with a nice move.
The Panthers continued to pile on shots and chances, but Quick was great. With about 13 minutes to go, Arthur Kaliyev was able to pick up a puck in the offensive zone and put a shot past Bobrovsky, which put the Kings ahead 4-1 and Los Angeles hung on for the win.
There were a lot of chances exchanged but Jonathan Quick had to be very good for the Kings, who were outshot 42-31. That said, they are missing half of their defense group and it was an important win against a team who’s been very good this year.
Drew Doughty was also out for the Kings after being placed in COVID protocol, while Andreas Athanasiou had been placed on injured reserve.
The Kings’ next game comes tomorrow against the Carolina Hurricanes.
