The Los Angeles Kings split their back-to-back games this weekend, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes yesterday, before beating the Washington Capitals tonight.
In their loss to the Hurricanes, the Kings got down early and couldn’t recover. They allowed an early goal, unsuccessfully challenged it and then got scored against on the ensuing power play to go down 2-0 under two minutes into the game. Carolina added to their lead in the second period and while Blake Lizotte got Los Angeles on the board, they still fell 5-1.
The Kings found themselves in a hole again tonight. They were down 2-0 by a little over the midway point of the game but once again, it was Lizotte picking up the first goal of the game for Los Angeles. Then in the third period, Christian Wolanin capitalized on a big rebound, before Adrian Kempe gave the Kings the lead, getting to the net and managing to put a puck past Vitek Vanecek. The Kings managed to kill off all six of Washington's power plays and hung on for a big 3-2 to close out their road trip.
Phillip Danault and Cal Petersen both joined Drew Doughty in COVID protocol. As a result, Garret Sparks made his debut with the Kings, stopping 33 shots in the win.
Another piece of news that came out today was that the NHL has postponed upcoming games that involve cross-border travel. This means the Kings’ game against the Edmonton Oilers originally scheduled for Wednesday will be pushed back.
As a result, the team’s next game will take place on Thursday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
