The game started pretty slow, with neither team giving the other much to work with in the first period. While we saw a bit more action in the second period, it was in the third where the game opened up a bit and each team managed to get some quality chances.
The fourth line scored both of New York’s goals and were impressive in the win. I’d also say Oliver Wahlstrom looks good and could work well with Jean-Gabriel Pageau going forward, while Jordan Eberle was really involved, despite not getting on the scoresheet.
Defensively, the Islanders were a lot better than they were throughout the majority of the losing skid. While they gave up some odd-man rushes in the third period, it was a strong outing overall.
Semyon Varlamov picked up his third shutout in just his first eight games of the season. While he didn’t face a ton of great chances in the first two periods, he had to make some really strong saves as the game went along and was certainly a key reason the Islanders got the win.
The Islanders looked fairly good last night and have seemingly turned a page, since returning to action after their losing streak.
