The San Jose Sharks have traded goaltender Devan Dubnyk to the Colorado Avalanche, in exchange for a fifth-round pick in this year’s NHL Draft and defenseman Greg Pateryn.

The Sharks had acquired Dubnyk in the offseason and he’s essentially split the workload with Martin Jones this year, posting an .898 save percentage in 17 games. Dubnyk will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

Pateryn is a 30-year-old, right-handed defenseman with 278 games of NHL experience. He started the year with the Minnesota Wild, before being dealt to the Colorado Avalanche but has split the year between the NHL and AHL.

ANALYSIS

The Sharks didn’t get back a whole lot, but I don’t think anyone really should’ve expected them to. Dubnyk is an aging goalie on an expiring contract and while his numbers make his tenure in San Jose look worse than it was, an .898 save percentage isn’t overly attractive to teams looking to add a goalie.

Essentially, San Jose got back a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, after dealing one away for next year’s draft, in order to acquire Dubnyk in the offseason. With the addition of Pateryn, the Sharks also added some short-term defensive depth along the way.

It’s pretty minor but I’ve got no issues with this trade.
