Completing their second trade this week, the San Jose Sharks acquired forward Egor Afanasyev from the Nashville Predators today, in exchange for Ozzy Wiesblatt.
Selected 45th overall by the Predators in 2019, Afanasyev has spent the majority of the last three seasons in the AHL. While he’s only drawn into 19 career NHL games thus far (and only suited up with the Predators twice this past season), his AHL production took a big jump this year, managing 27 goals and 54 points in 56 games. The 23-year-old forward stands at 6-foot-4, weighing 211 pounds.
Wiesblatt, on the other hand, was selected by the Sharks in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft, at 31st overall. The forward made the jump to professional hockey two years ago, but has struggled to find offense at the AHL level. This past season, the 22-year-old scored four goals and 17 points in 50 games, split between the San Jose Barracuda and Milwaukee Admirals.
Considering both players have yet to make the NHL yet, this is a tough trade to really make out a clear winner or loser – that’s likely a conversation for a few years down the line. But at this point, Afanasyev has been able to post much better numbers in the AHL, and has a more realistic shot at pushing for a roster spot with the Sharks next season. At least on the surface, this is a really worthwhile trade for San Jose.
