Quick Hits: July 24, 2024

1) The Flyers will formally introduce highly touted rookie right winger Matvei Michkov at an 11 a.m. EDT press conference at the FTC in Voorhees alongside general manager Danny Briere. Michkov will have Flyers skating coach Slava Kouznetsov as an interpreter.

2) Briere and president of hockey operations Keith Jones picked up Michkov at JFK Airport in New York yesterday morning and then drove him to Voorhees, where he posed for some photos and met several fellow prospects who are working out at the team training facility. Reportedly, the first question Michkov asked was whether he'd be allowed to skate on the FTC ice the same day (he was not, as the ice was unavailable on Tuesday due to sled hockey tournament).

3) The 39 Things to Know about Matvei Michkov article is now live on PhiladelphiaFlyers.com. The release was rolled back to coincide with Michkov's arrival day.

4) Upcoming articles on the team's official site will look at Tyson Foerster, Part 2 of the Prospect Directory series (2019 to 2022 Drafts), and an offseason series on the Flyers' Hometown Assist program (which provides resources to small, locally owned businesses).

5) The Flyers off-season Community Caravan event in Media has been moved back to Wednesday, August 14 at Veterans Square and State Street from 6 p.m. EDT to 8 p.m. EDT.

6) Today in Flyers History: July 24, 2021

Overlapping the second day of the 2021 NHL Draft, the Flyers make a one-for-one trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flyers send veteran right winger Jakub Voracek back to his original NHL club in exchange for veteran right winger Cam Atkinson. The trade works out for both teams during the 2021-22 but both players are subsequently sidelined due to serious injuries.

Voracek is eventually forced to retire due to post-concussion issues. Atkinson misses the entire 2022-23 season due to neck surgery. He returns in 2023-24 but, after a quick start, struggles from mid-November onward. The Flyers subsequently buy out the final season of Atkinson's contract. He signs with the Tampa Bay Lighnting as an unrestricted free agent.

7) Flyers Alumni birthday: Johan Backlund (1981).
