1) Today is a off-day at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championships. The tournament's four medal-round quarterfinal games will be on Wednesday. The preliminary round concluded on Monday after Team Canada doubled up Finland, 6-3, Switzerland skated to a 3-2 victory over Austria and Sweden closed out the prelims with a 4-2 win against Germany.
Tyson Foerster scored a power play rebound goal in the Canada vs. Finland game, while Elliot Desnoyers continued to play less than 10 minutes of fourth-line duty. Emil Andrae collected two more assists for Sweden, including a highlight reel bank pass to Oskar Magnusson on the sequence that produced the Junior Crowns' third goal. Brian Zanetti, who is dealing with an injury, did not dress for Switzerland in Tuesday's game.
2) Quarterfinal games on Wednesday: Finland vs. Germany, Sweden vs. Latvia, Canada vs. Switzerland, USA vs. Czechia. Eliminated teams are Slovakia and Austria. The Austrians (0-4-0) were the only team to lose all four of its preliminaries.
3) Every Child Deserves a Bike: The Flyers Alumni Association's Flyers fan-funded program of ordering and personally delivering adaptive bicycles to local special needs children made its 14th delivery celebration yesterday. The recipient was 18-year-old Patrick McClure of West Chester, PA. Patrick, who deals with complications from cerebral palsy and who suffered a stroke while in utero, has undergone multiple surgeries over his young life to improve both his vision and mobility. His new adaptive bike will enhance his range of independent mobility.
4) Correction: I had erroneous information in Monday's blog regarding the status of Flyers 2018 sixth-round pick Gavin Hain. Due to the NCAA's pandemic-related ruling on player eligibility, Hain will exercise his option for a fifth season of eligibility at North Dakota. He had missed roughly half of the 2021-22 season due to knee surgery and wants to complete his college career on the ice rather than on the sidelines. As a result, the Flyers will hold his NHL signing rights until Aug. 15, 2023. He'd have otherwise become an unrestricted free agent this year for NHL rights purposes.
