QUICK UPDATE - expiring contracts for next season (20/21) are eligible to sign extensions 3 days after the CBA was ratified (Friday). Starting Monday June 13th, a steady flow of signings/extensions could be coming. Yzerman now has the cap number and enough information to extend the Free Agents he wants to keep in the fold. The one stickler at this point is the unknown AHL situation. There is still an unknown as to whether or not the AHL will start back up. It would make those deals nearly impossible to gauge at this point. I would expect to see some forward motion on Mantha, Bertuzzi, Fabbri and possibly Svechnikov. At this point, Detroit only has 11 NHL contracts going into next year.
A quick update on the Mike Green trade. Green is opting out of a return for the playoffs. He played only 2 games for Edmonton after being traded. At this point, Detroit will receive a 4th round pick. There were some complaints about retained salary in the comments, but getting anything in this deal is a step forward. All the best to Mike and family, grateful for his time in Detroit.
My 200th blog was a memorable one, to be sure. There’s a reason I believe Hockey is the greatest sport in the world. A big part of it, is the fans. Whether you like or dislike my take, every one of you that takes time to read and comment is a huge blessing. Toronto has incredible talent, passionate fans, and a tough cap situation. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

If Vancouver is really looking to trade Brock Boeser, Detroit would be insane not to put together a good offer. Continue reading the blog, and there are those who think this would be a huge mistake. Detroit may not have the piece Vancouver wants, particularly if it’s a top 4 D man. That would be Seider, and I doubt Yzerman would go there.
The 2015 Draft can, at times, feel like a “what might have been” draft. Detroit took Evgeni Svechnikov at 19. Joel Eriksson Ek went at 20, Colin White went at 21, and Boeser was picked 23rd. BB has 29, 26, and 16 goals in the past 3 campaigns. At 6’1”, the right shot winger has already made a mark. With only 57 games played last year, he would probably have broken 20 again with a full season.
It is impossible to criticize Svechnikov’s development, as it’s been derailed by injuries. He’s shown flashes when healthy. Svech is also one of the better human beings you’ll ever meet. His work ethic is amazing, his commitment to family and team are through the roof. This is a person who, after receiving his first signing bonus (usually 30K or more) he sent it all to his parents. He did it with a smile. I would not be surprised if his missing teeth were donated to a sibling in a life saving dental procedure. He’s that guy.
Detroit, however, needs young and functioning assets. Svech may well still get it going, but Boeser could make a significant impact. The price will be high in terms of prospects and picks. If Vancouver wants to clear space and add, that enters into Berggren, Veleno and high draft pick territory. Detroit won’t part with their first round pick, but a trade back plus a prospect? Maybe....
B2 would be more than welcome in Motown. There is a lot to like there. The problem is going to be coming up with a scenario that Vancouver loves in terms of players. I imagine that Vancouver could grab a first rounder from teams picking 13 - 31. This kid seems to be the real deal.
What would you give up? Is Brock a piece to the puzzle that could move Detroit a few notches ahead? Vancouver fans, what would it take? Picks and prospects? Let me know!
