The return from the 4 Nations is everything some fans were concerned about and less. Larkin and Raymond both seem off their game. The entire team has lost every step they gained in McLellan’s taking over the bench. In short, whatever happened to the mindset of this club in those two weeks has put it on the path to quick irrelevance in terms of the post season.
Yzerman has 3 day. 1 game in between, but 3 days. There just isn’t enough available to fix what this team has decided to fall into. Failed opportunities, failed power plays, and goalies that have fallen to the levels of the preseason estimation. As frustrating as it is to watch, imagine having to put it all together in a summary. This team looks like they have quit, again.
Yes, the schedule is insane. That doesn’t account for the losses to Columbus. The goalies that had been the backbone of the team are now unable to cover up the lack of scoring and defensive awareness around the net. Constant holes opening at in opportune time. As unpleasant as it is to watch, imagine having to put together a post game segment and be honest about what’s been going on with this team. Horrible start, huge boost, looking like a horrible finish. To try and crank out 25-30 articles covering the constant middling finishes each month, hoping the team will surprise you, has its own wear and tear.
Many of you will point out the “almost” and the moments where Detroit was just inches away from unfortunately, the scoreboard dictates the outcome. not what almost happened, but what the finish presented. Right now, Detroit cannot get past “what could have been”.
Whether Yzerman makes a splash or stands pat, it is up to the players in the room to get back on track. Starting to see players worry about their numbers and that can be death to a team. Go play your game and find whatever it was that brought this group together.
