The NCAA has voted to let students transfer in from the CHL. In an ironic twist, the interview I’m embedding was with coach Bob Daniels and we talked about the implications about 30 minutes before this was released.
Make no mistake, Football and Basketball have already seen huge impact with the Name, Image, Likeness deal. Caitlin Clark is rumored to have made 1m in endorsements from Nike in her senior year. Her WNBA salary is the base 88k, but the player secured 50m in endorsements over 10 years from Wilson and Nike. A quarterback in Nevada quit the team (on the advice from his agent) after 3 games. He demanded more money, didn’t get it, and dropped out. Fire your agent, kid.
For Hockey, the recruitment process for the NCAA now has a massive talent pool with the CHL open and, as you’ll hear in the interview, possible agreements with lower leagues in Europe for those kids to come over. A large school with a lot of alumni $ can hypothetically work with an agent/representative on an endorsement to help in the process. You’ll hear more about that role in the video. Thank you so much to coach Daniels who ironically coached Jeff Blashill who then became an assistant, and when Blash went to Western LaLonde took his place on staff.
On LaLonde, you’ll hear the coach’s description. I’ve been openly critical of LaLonde as a “soft touch”, but apparently he is more than able to get fiery. The “new” NHL has many coaches feeling like they need player approval/near friendship to stay in the league. The pendulum continues to shift. I hope you enjoy the first of what I hope to be many interviews on a new Youtube channel “Strings and Pucks”.
