I posted earlier today That the market for Zack Hyman is blowing up. I try to avoid double posting, but the Captain has been hard at work. Richard Panik, a 2nd round pick (52nd) as well as retention on Panik’s deal went out and Nick Leddy came in. Yzerman said early in the summer that he wanted two left side defensemen for this year.

One of my favorite Chicago D men, definitely a left side upgrade for now. In reality, Leddy has just one year left on his deal. He’s one of 4 defensemen (listed as in the NHL) signed for Detroit. Dekeyser, Stecher and Newpower are the other three listed. Dekeyser and Stecher both have expiring deals after this season as well. That’s part of the attraction with Leddy. it’s only one year. Yzerman wanted to bring in two left side defensemen. On top of that, moveable at the deadline so he can possibly recover a draft pick. Akin to bringing in Staal last year.

I don’t know if this means that Dekeyser is on his way out. He was waived last year, I don’t know if Seattle would have interest in the oft injured veteran D man. Regardless, it will be interesting to see who Leddy is paired with. Stecher (if he’s still here)? Hronek? Maybe the young Seider will play Padawan to the former cup champion Jedi.

Just to get up to speed, along with the 4 defensemen, Detroit currently has 5 forwards signed for this coming season. Larkin, Zadina, Nielsen, Fabbri and Namestnikov. All but Larkin are on expiring deals (after this seasons). Greiss is signed in net for this season. Detroit is listed at 37+ million spent, 44+ million in cap space.
