Where Cam Talbot stole a game for Detroit the other night, tonight Detroit was kept in the cold even with outshooting Montreal 2 to 1. Detroit could only muster 1 goal in 40 shots, and likely put the final nail in the post season door to keep it closed for another season.
The team effort was there, and yet it’s always a backward result. They need to score a disproportionate number of goals while being outshot to win. When the effort is there, the ‘W’ isn’t. While it was a long shot, the team was still in the mix. They just don’t have what they need in too many areas and Montreal does right now.
There is an almost visceral and physical pain to see that effort fall short in a 4 point contest (or any time) and waiting for the venom that follows. It is a blessing to be able to blog about this Detroit team, but nights like this hurt. A .970 goalie stopping 32 of 33 becomes an .895 goalie giving up 2 goals on 19 shots.
Full marks to Montembeault and the Montreal squad that have had a fiery comeback this year. It’s just a rough night for Detroit.
1st Period goals:
At 9:54 Dylan Larkin opened the scoring (29) as Detroit was heavily outshooting Montreal 14-2. Seider made a nice one handed pass to Kane in the D zone. The trio of Kane/Larkin/Debrincat headed up ice. Larkin had his stick on the ice and Kane sent the puck far side for a tip in to get the Captain out of his slump. 1-0 DET
