It’s getting interesting on the prospect front after a long weekend of digging through some NCAA paperwork and looking at prospects. There will be a video, but this interesting tidbit prompted a small glimpse.
According to PHR, Detroit is looking at signing goaltender Arvid Holm. The net minder spent time in the SHL after being non tendered by Colorado. Without knowing specific plans for Holm, it’s interesting that this comes about a week after
Trey Augustine announced that he was staying at MSU for another season.
So, this is where the weekend comes in. Multiple NCAA hockey players have entered the transfer portal, including a backup goalie at MSU. Then this appeared on
Trey Augustine’s instagram page. He and Redmond Savage are among players to be featured in a new line of clothing for “KIWICLO”. Full disclosure, at this point the site will let you get on the mailing list and states that proceeds from sales will go to a charity. After working for 15 years with various charities, that doesn’t mean the endorsing parties don’t get paid. You have to dig for the financials (not yet available) on what percentage of the sale goes to the charity. The featured athletes will likely get a percentage or fixed amount from the company. Head to the website for KIWICLO and you can get email notifications once the MSU licensed gear is available. Some cool designs.
Then I found this. An official NIL store for MSU athletes with this page labled like this:
TREY AUGUSTINE'S LOCKER ROOM
Thanks for supporting Trey Augustine. Every purchase puts money directly into their pocket!
The two licensing deals are at least interesting and with the seasons Trey has been having, it will be interesting to see what the sales figures are like. Redmond Savage is also being highlighted for KIWICO. Still digging for other deals, but it’s clear that being a college athlete has newer perks.
So, is Detroit padding the goaltender pipline “just in case”? We’ve debated the decisions and now some of the money is coming to light. It’s also a boost to see Detroit prospects specifically getting original designs at the NCAA level, and shows a level of fan interest that should be exciting for the team and player.
The final thought, if an athlete can make their situation better that in itself is a good thing. The concern will be, of course, if it leads to deals from conflicting sources (i.e. other teams).
Let me know your thoughts on the pickup. The article lists Mrazek and Talbot as next year’s tandem in Detroit with Cossa getting more of the load in GR. I actually don’t believe it’s that cut and dry. Cossa could be in line to see some NHL time and I do still believe Augustine was highly hoped for in the system next year. It will all pan out at some point, just some interesting developments.
