Seider and Zadina officially assigned, Veleno isn’t

The exodus of players to European clubs is in full swing. We took a look at some of the movement, and that has only gained steam. There were some interesting developments in the minor and junior leagues that may stem the tide a bit this week.

MLive writer Lauren Williams did a well written post on Zadina (and Seider) being officially loaned to their perspective teams. Notably absent from the headline was Joe Veleno. I was able to confirm that, at this point, Veleno hasn’t been assigned even though Yzerman has been in negotiations with the same Czech club for JV to get some reps in. It may be nothing. Much like the original exodus, there may need to be a parting of the Red Sea (well, red tape more likely. International Visas are a bit tricky for North American players sometimes). However, it may also be linked to some news out of the ECHL and some of the CHL.

Gavin Lee posted that the ECHL, OHL and WHL have all announced early December start dates. There will be an asterisk as these starts (as well as the AHL) still hinge on state on provincial clearance for attendance. This may well have affected the decision to send Veleno over to the Czech Republic with Zadina. Or, if you want to go full conspiracy, is it possible that Veleno could be part of a trade? I really, really doubt it. But, there are certainly deals to be made out there. Yzerman doesn’t show his hand until he starts collecting everyone else’s chips. He’s like my younger brother. That kid cleans you (or me) out with a smile on his face after hours of no visible response. Thank God we only played for M&Ms.

Of local interest, Detroit native Everett Fitzhugh has been named the play by play voice of the Seattle Kraken. He is the first full time Black announcer in NHL history. Congratulations to the 31 year broadcast veteran! It is always a joy to see how Michigan contributes to this sport in so many ways. A very proud moment for this lifelong Michigander.

Again, there is no real rumor of Veleno being traded. But, if he was, what would you seek in return? Negotiation rights for Torey Krug (if available)? Ken Holland is very high on Veleno as well. Edmonton may well need to shed some cap and be willing to bring in the young center. Boston is also up against it. They have 5 expiring NHL contracts and 9 expiring AHL contracts. Even though 16 million in space is nothing to sneeze at, there are some big deals coming. A possible swap for Charlie Coyle? His hit goes up to 5.25 M. The obvious, whichever team picks first overall and gets Lafreniere. He and Veleno have chemistry and will both be on team friendly $. The expected return would have to be another center or a defenseman. Would you make a deal? Let me know!
