Sprong song, deals in the works or just lip service to pass the time?

Daniel Sprong got a “free agent” write up today. What is interesting is the salary being discussed. Detroit was said to have spoken to all outgoing UFA, and Sprong was said to be looking for a raise. In the article, this quote is given in those regards:

Most players who make it past the initial wave of UFA craziness usually have to settle for one-year deals. Evolving Hockey had predicted a three-year deal in the $3.3MM AAV range to begin with, but it’s unlikely he’ll receive that kind of term with the dust settled on pretty much everyone’s long-term planning. He could still very well land something around that cap hit, but likely on a one-year deal as he had in Detroit last year.

A jump to 3.3m seems like it was something the agent would have been convinced was possible. Now, you’re looking at, potentially, another 1 year deal and if that’s the case it would be nice to see Detroit take a look on the “boomerang” tour. Rumors of agents and GMs overplaying their hands are trickling out slowly as today Cap Friendly is gone.

Of interest, GMs were said to be “unhappy” with Cap Friendly’s level of available detail over the past couple of years. Agents are scrambling to inject changes that would allow clients to have bargaining rights more quickly (such as reducing the draft by up to 3 rounds). It’s a strange landscape to be sure as raises are coming for the biggest names in the league in Matthews and soon McDavid. For any who remember the panels there was a thought that the cap could be close to 100m by this time so those deals would be no problem. It looks like some of the lower paid UFAs will once again be making late decisions, possibly even accepting PTOs.

On the trade front, Detroit is rumored to have looked at a couple of different defensemen. Ekblad and Barrie are two of the most recent with this blog (and commenters) looking at Utah’s Victor Soderstrom as a possible trade asset while the team awaits arbitration. As per usual, we won’t know until something does or doesn’t happen. It has at least caused some interesting conversations.

So, your turn. Who do you move to make a spot for Sprong if he wants to come back for 1 more year? Tarasenko mentioned speaking to former teammates about Detroit, does he give Ekblad a call? What would Florida ask for a move to be made? Let me know your thoughts and thanks to all who stop by.
