I posted my final thoughts about the 2021 draft earlier today.

In some ways, it’s sad to hear so many people disgusted or angry about Steve Yzerman’s pick. I feel like he’s earned some credit, enough to see how it pans out. I guess I’m pretty much alone in that at this point. Several of you are in that same boat. I disagree that Yzerman doesn’t “run” the draft. He does more of his own scouting that any GM that I know. Kris Draper, certainly, has a lot of input. But Yzerman traveled fairly extensively last year to the European leagues. Before he was signed here, he spend much of that year “off” with his brother scouting. What Draper has brought to the table is better local scouting. Yes, he stood tall for Cholo, but he also pushed for Bertuzzi when no one else wanted him that early. Put the egg timer on, when the oven opens up in 2024 we’ll have a much better feel for how this really went.

Most of you already know that Yzerman re-signed defenseman Marc Staal; One year, $2 million, and a full no-move clause is what’s being reported. I’m good with the deal.

I’m good with the Staal signing. He was really good in settling things down last year. Now we’re bringing in Nick Leddy as well who can help with the power play. Along with Danny Dekeyser, the left side is definitely a bit more on the “veteran” side than the right. On the right, so far, we have Filip Hronek, Moritz Seider and Troy Stecher. It is so bizarre to see how in his third year the defense is completely different. I don’t know if Yzerman will seek out another defenseman in free agency. I wouldn’t mind Tony DeAngelo, if Yzerman thinks he’ll work well in the room. He can play the left side (yes he’s a righty), and we’re probably going to be dealing with injuries during the year.

Just for fun, let me know your projected pairings. I initially thought Hronek/Staal, Seider/Leddy, Dekeyser/Stecher. Hronek on PP1 and Seider or Stecher on pp2. Let me know your thoughts, and if any other signings come in today, I’ll add them to this post.

I’m going to keep this blog “fluid” in case any other signing trickle in. Tomorrow I’ll start a new one, same purpose. “Gear Corner” and “Summer Reading” are on hold for now.
