I looked at Zadina and Seider in the last post. With the post season in full effect and start dates projected for December, Yzerman is starting to wade through the altered plans for offseason and preseason placements. With a stack of expiring contracts, the GM has made some headway there as well.
Evgeny Svechnikov has been signed to a one year extension. Details aren’t available yet, but it’s fairly clear that this is an important deal for the 6’3” winger. He’s now out of waiver options, and this is a make it or break it deal in many ways.
Injuries have done their fair share to derail the elder Svechnikov. Even in the midst of all he’s faced, Evgeny is one of the most positive and impressive young men you’ll meet. His commitment to team and to family is incredibly strong. It’s been well documented that his very first bonus check was sent home to take care of the family. Most guys are getting a car or setting up a fantastic outing. Evgeny just smiled and said he has everything he needs, his family needed it more. Impressive.
As a human being, I want this young man to succeed. When healthy, he brings some interesting dynamics and can certainly make plays. At only 23, he still have an opportunity to impact and create a place for himself. We’ll see what this season holds, but it seems clear that Svech will be donning the Winged Wheel.
