When looking at the Brady Tkachuk situation, it really is too bad that his brother Matthew had to weigh in with comments on Friday night regarding his brother’s contract negotiations. Part of me thinks this was a calculated move with only a few days until training camp as I think the frustration level of Brady is starting to mount. As I mentioned a few days ago, the bonus structure to the contract and how much money will be back loaded are the issues that are holding up an agreement. Were Matthew’s words a warning shot at owner Eugene Melnyk? We all know management is very much against any bonuses going back to the Dany Heatley deal years ago. I have said this over and over, Tkachuk needs to be signed by training camp.
As for Logan Brown, he has officially signed his qualifying offer. Sadly, Sens GM Pierre Dorion wouldn’t deal Brown for a draft pick and kept his word that it needed to be a hockey deal. The animosity on both sides is so intense that one has to wonder how the coaching staff uses Brown during the pre-season games. Brown will be one of the most watched players by fans and management, to see how his 6th NHL training camp plays out. The coaching staff has to put Brown in every situation possible to see if he might be able to grab a fulltime spot on the roster, while increasing his value, as he didn’t get pre-season games last year. What I did find interesting were the remarks made by Pierre McGuire on the 2nd intermission on TSN1200 during the Sens rookie game. When asked about Brown, he said, “Brown needs to establish how he wants to play and be a pro hockey player.” Ball is definitely in Logan’s court!
Very quick hits on the Sens rookie game vs. Montreal this afternoon as I was only able to watch pieces of the game. Apologies. A come from behind win by scoring two goals in 46 seconds in the 3rd period, to pull out a 4-3 win.
Jacob Bernard-Docker was easily the best defenseman on the ice, with Lassi Thomson having a strong showing.
Shane Pinto, solid game, outside of the “Jason Spezza” blind pass from behind his own goal that led to a Habs goal.
Cole Reinhardt had a goal and truly stood out as one of the best forwards this afternoon.
Outside of the weak wrap-around goal that he allowed, Mads Sogaard looked very strong in goal for 2 periods. Leevi Merilainen played the third period and found out about the North American rules on where he can play the puck but did make an outstanding save with a few seconds left in the game to preserve the 4-3 win.
Egor Sokolov didn’t have the type of game that I think many expected, but it’s one game!
Again, apologies, I didn't get to see the entire game but I wanted to post a bit on it so Sens fans could discuss it in the comments of the blog. A rematch of the rookie game takes place in Montreal on Monday night.
Thanks for reading.
