Negotiations between restricted free agent Brady Tkachuk and the Ottawa Senators have been relatively quiet over the past month. Sens GM Pierre Dorion has done a good job of keeping things quiet between management and Tkachuk’s agent Craig Oster. A few offers have been tabled back and forth, but I am told from an extremely reliable source that Ottawa offered Tkachuk their best offer to date over the weekend, with a six-year contract offer worth 42 million. (For the record, I had Ottawa trading Evgenii Dadanov posted here, before any hockey insider on twitter or any hockey site.)
Personally, the $7 million average annual value is a great number for both sides.
This deal would take Tkachuk until the end of the 2026-27 season, one year short of defenseman Thomas Chabot’s deal expiring. When looking at this contract offer, it allows the Sens to have Tkachuk for his best years without having to be back in this position a few years from now if they were to agree on a three-year bridge deal. Tkachuk could then be an unrestricted free agent and get another large payday as he would only be 27 years of age when the contract would expire. A win-win for both sides.
It would show fans and the players that they are committed to winning now! Owner Eugene Melnyk has gone on record as saying the teams window to contend for a Stanley Cup will be over the next five years.
Melnyk has also stated that a long term deal would basically cement Tkachuk as captain of the team. Lets not forget Melnyk stated back in May and I quote, “You can’t have a captain there on a bridge contract. It’s not gonna happen.”
The team still needs to sign RFA Drake Batherson but getting the Tkachuk deal done first would give Batherson’s camp a better idea of what to expect for his new deal. Maybe if Dorion can get both deals done, he will finally be given a contract extension, with his deal set to expire at the end of the coming season.
Lastly, all is quiet on RFA’s Logan Brown and Filip Gustavsson.
I will be back daily to update any news I have on Tkachuk and Batherson. So be sure to check here at HB or on my twitter feed!
Well Sens fans, would you be okay with the contract offer of 6 years for 42 million?! Discuss in the comment section! I will join in as I always do, off and on, throughout the day.
