Give me a twitter follow, I will give you a follow too!

First off, a quick thank you to all of you that messaged me on twitter or here on HB, your support is so appreciated and I am so glad to write for all Sens fans at hockeybuzz! The last week has been work and family commitments with school starting so it was extremely difficult to try to get up quality blogs here at hockeybuzz. Now that I am back on a regular schedule I will be back to posting 4-5 blogs a week and during the NHL regular season I will post daily!

Naturally the biggest Sens topic has been when will Brady Tkachuk sign an extension with the Ottawa Senators. Will it be a bridge deal or a long term deal? What I can tell you is that the Tkachuk camp would like nothing more than to get a deal similar to that of Thomas Chabot. If management or should I say Sens owner Eugene Melnyk won’t commit to an 8 year deal with similar AAV, then both sides are destined for a 3 year bridge deal. I can’t see the contract negotiations dragging on another week, especially with Pierre McGuire now in the fold. He is the voice of reason for Melnyk, much like Bryan Murray was after he stepped aside as GM. Many times Murray would be the one who reasoned with Melnyk on personnel issues, getting Melnyk to realize the NHL dynamics. As well, a great tweet and the first to report it online by @NewEraSens on Friday evening, stating how Tkachuk does plan on getting to Ottawa this coming week with the hopes of either getting a deal done this weekend or face to face when he arrives in Ottawa with his agent.

I truly thought both management and this ridiculous owner would've learned years ago from the Daniel Alfredsson contract situation that Eugene screwed up after going back on his word with Alfredsson. He tried to call Alfredsson’s bluff and it backfired badly! Many believe Tkachuk will be the next captain of this team, who actually wants to be in Ottawa, enjoys living here and playing here, yet you flat out “jerk” him around. For all the great things that have occurred on and off the ice the last two seasons here in Ottawa after a public relations nightmare of multiple incidents for a couple of years prior, I really thought this organization had turned the corner. The last thing this team needs is any animosity being created with its best player and with ten days until training camp, management needs to get this contract extension done NOW!

With regards to Logan Brown, the Sens other RFA, it comes as no surprise that Brown will never wear a Sens uniform again. As I mentioned last week, Brown’s camp truly thought he would be dealt as the Arizona Coyotes had made a solid offer. They have since made a 2nd offer for Brown but I was told that Dorion turned it down immediately. Instead, the resentment and animosity on both sides has hit an all time high. Now Dorion is steadfast with any team wanting to acquire him that it must be a hockey deal. He should’ve thought of that a year or two ago when Ottawa had leverage but now you have a deteriorating asset with little value.

Sens GM Pierre Dorion has since countered an offer to Arizona that would include one of their two 2nd round picks in the 2022 entry draft, along with Brown for RW Christian Fischer. At 24 years of age, making 1 million this season, he has one year left on his deal and is an RFA come season’s end. It’s no secret that Ottawa needs help at the RW position and ironically Fischer played with Logan for one year in Windsor back in 2015-16. Fischer’s numbers have tailed off dramatically from his 2017-18 season and could use a change of scenery.

Worst case scenario is Brown goes to play in Sweden this year and eventually the Sens get nothing for him. What has me puzzled with Dorion in regards to the Brown situation is how this past season he had no problem putting Rudolph Balcers on waivers, losing him for nothing. Many in league circles said Dorion had to know there was no way he would make it through waivers. He did so, so he could keep a few veterans around in the early part of the season, none of which did anything production wise on the ice. But now he wants a hockey deal for Brown. He had a much better asset in Balcers and by putting him on waivers, he was ok getting nothing in return. But now Dorion seems to think Brown has more upside?! Go figure.
