Huberdeau Signs Eight Year Extension

It all seems very strange.

Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving must have had something in mind when he flew out to Montreal to meet up with recent acquisition Jonathan Huberdeau for a face-to-face meeting. Tonight’s news sheds some light on those intentions.

Now, without playing a single game for the Flames, without picking out a prospective neighbourhood, without spending even a day in Calgary since being traded — Jonathan Huberdeau is committing to being a Calgary Flame for eight years after this next season to the tune of a 10.5 million dollar annual average value.

His contract will outlast the current head coach, very likely the current GM, and most likely every roster player that dressed for a game last year.

Despite the nature of the situation, it’s hard to complain. Huberdeau has 254 points in the last three seasons. That ranks him third in the NHL behind Connor McDavid and Leon Draisatl. 207 games were played by the Panthers in those three seasons and the St-Jerome, Quebec native has dressed for 204 of those. He ranked sixth on the team in hits during that period as well.

Treliving still has 2,761,667 in cap space with only Slovak center Adam Ruzicka left to sign as an RFA.
