Claude Giroux made history as the Ottawa Senators topped the Washington Capitals in overtime to even the 2024-2025 regular season series at one game a piece; the season series winner will be decided in Washington, D.C., on March 3rd. The final score of last evening’s contest was 5-4.

Period I

Two bench penalty minors were assessed to Washington in the early portion of the game. No goals scored; 11 shots for the home team; 7 from the visitors.

Period II

Taylor Raddysh was sent to the penalty box for a high stick on Tim Stützle; Ridley Greig scored the opening goal on the powerplay. Greig’s eighth goal of the season and 50th career point were assisted by David Perron, earning his first point in an Ottawa sweater; and Thomas Chabot.

Connor McMichael answered back for the Capitals to tie the game at one-to-one. McMichael tied his career high with 18 goals in a regular season. Former Los Angeles Kings’ Pierre-Luc Dubois and Matt Roy had the assists.

Thirteen seconds into a Travis Hamonic penalty kill, Caps’ defender John Carlsson tripped Josh Norris on a breakaway, resulting in a short handed penalty shot for Ottawa. Norris capitalized for his career high 18th goal of the season.

Thirty-eight seconds later, in the same kill, Shane Pinto recorded his 10th goal of the season. Norris and Jake Sanderson had the assists.

Period III

Dylan Strome scored 8 seconds after a Norris minor penalty for his 14th of the year from John Carlsson and Alexander Ovechkin.

Jake Sanderson regained the two goal lead on a second Raddysh penalty for the blue liner’s third goal of the campaign from Claude Giroux and Tim Stützle. Giroux became the 67th player in NHL history to score 1,100 points in a pro career.

Alex Ovechkin is now 19 goals away from breaking the all time goals record with his 23rd goal of the year and 876th career goal. Alakesi Protas and McMichael had the apples.

Strome scored his second goal of the night 90 seconds after Ovi for his 15th of the season Ovi and Tom Wilson.

Overtime

Thomas Chabot netted the game winner for his fourth of the season from Pinto and Norris.
