We would front load it, and could trade him in two years to a team that wants to meet the cap ceiling without having to pay the salary, If we make it a signing bonus, and front load the contract, the salary owed on a cap hit of 7.5 M could be less than half of that. And for that reason alone there would be teams willing to take him on if it turned out to be a cap space restricting situation for the Sabres. If he decides to retire after two years when he has collected the majority of the contract, then it is just money out of Pegula's pocket, and there are no real consequences to the team other than than.

Yes it is an overpayment, but Pegula is willing to overpay if he can do so in a way that is compliant with the CBA and does not hurt the team longterm. And because the cap keeps going up, that is exactly what he can do.

It would not be a mistake, or a "stupid, stupid move". It would simply be the owners prerogative to spend what he wants to try to improve the team.

If in two years we are unable to retain players because of cap space limitations, and Pominville and Vanek walk away in FA because we can not afford them with contracts like Leino and Doan on the books, Pegula has already proven he is willing to hide salaries away in the AHL to avoid buyout penalties.

Pegula is no joke. He will do everything monetarily possible to win a cup.
