Bill Meltzer: Lilja has Hip Surgery, Will Miss Four Months - bmeltzer
Not a huge issue, will certainly provide more time for Gustafsson and Bourdon to cement spots.
I didn;t expect Lilja to be much more than a 7th guy this season, anyhow. Certainly not as big a blow as the Meszaros injury.
The other good news is, there's a slew of decent depth free agents the Flyers can pursue right now. |

Just more material for the schtick-heads today. Glad I stopped in early and got it out of the way.

My hope had been that the Flyers could have found another team looking for a serviceable and inexpensive veteran #6/#7 Dman for one year, sending the Flyers a conditional draft pick (the condition being GP next season) in exchange for Lilja. Then Gervais would have been the Flyers #6/#7.
No chance of that now. |

That would have been nice, if only to open a contract slot. That's really the worst part of this, having that dead contract slot until November or December |

Ok - trying to be positive on a sunday morning... This doesn't change the top 4; Timmo, Coburn, Grossmann, Schenn. Gervais is probably already penciled in at the 5th spot? That meaning Gust, MAB, and Manning battle it out for the 6th spot? Where was Lilja going to fit anyways??? Battle for Gervais's spot, or in the mix for the 6th spot, or riding the bench - 7th defenseman.
Another positive. We just freed up another 700K in LTIR |

Stop being positive. The Flyers suck, they can't draft and they will never win a Stanley Cup |

There will have to be a another guy added before the season begins. Lilja doesn't hurt so bad but you have to have depth to allow for injuries over the course if the season and it doesn't look like we have much of it right now. |

With the uncertainity of the CBA, Lilja may miss no games this year. What a dreadful thought. |

Whats to be positive about? this team got manhandled in the second round of the playoffs, and has only gotten worse since their season ended. |

The way it's looking, if we had gotten Weber, we could have fit his salary in just on what we lost on LTIR..
Maybe it's not the plan, but i'd really like to see them pick up a dman UFA like Carlo C before he's off the market. We def need help on the back end here. |

Am I the only one who feels it is not that big of a deal to start with the following defense this year...
Coburn-Grossman (top shut down unit)
Timonen-Schenn (reliable 2nd unit)
Bourdon-Gusstavvson/Gervais (young developing kids)
Obviously this will need to be upgraded throughout the season but I don't see an issue with starting the season out this way to give some young kids some experience early on. The Flyers have had tremendous success acquiring dmen for dirt cheap during the regular season, I don't see why this season would be much different.
Patience is not a bad thing with this defense. In my opinion anyway |

no great loss here, but those hanging on to a dream of retaining all of our best young forwards are smoking something. we need a top 3 dman and there is simply no one available thru the FA mkt. by Dec, if not even sooner, a trade will be made cause this D crew is wanting...whether its because of age, injury, inexperience or lack of talent. |

With the amount of talent on offense... I don't move the young kids to get d-men. Patience is key in my opinion. Coburn, Carle, Grossman all acquired during the regular season for dirt cheap.
Unless you are acquiring a top flight clear cut beast on defense, I am not trading the young kids on offense. |

I'd like to get a UFA to plug the hole temporarily, then look for a trade mid season. Homer is in a position of weakness right now. Teams would try to fleece him and he wouldn't bite. I hope Bourdon and Gus are ready to handle the load. It also still worries me having Schenn in a top 4 slot right of the get go. |

Looking at the last game of the Playoffs
The Defensive line up was...
Timmo - Mez - Coburn - Grossman - Carle - Gust
Of which both, Timmo and Mez were playing hurt. Both Coburn and Grossman looked good. Carle played well enough. For Gust's first playoff, played well. This line up isn't bad if healthy, and even healthy - it's kind-of soft and doesn't help against getting manhandled.
Next year... The way I look at it...
Carle's out, Hopefully Gust in... Giving a chance, Gust may supply the offensive edge lost with Carle.
Mez out, Schenn in - Schenn should be able to fill in. A healthy Schenn is better than a hurt Mez.
Timmo - Cross fingers he's healthy and stays that way.
Coburn and Grossmann will need to play strong.
(Bryz will need to pick it up, and Lavy may need to adjust the system to protect Bryz a little more).
