Given that the praise was in direct reference to Gus's work on Malkin, it appears you have either selectively forgotten that shift or did not watch the game. |

I actually like all three players just dont think any are going to be more than 3rd pairing type players. I hope they prove me wrong. - stveshdy
I'd bet one of them breaks out, maybe not this year but eventually. You got three talented guys pushing themselves for this and they will have plenty of opportunity to do it.
Bourdon will never be a great skater, Gus ain't going to get any bigger and Manning still needs development. However there are other players on this team and in the league who have overcome these limitations to have established NHL careers.

Bill promised never to do that again after the 2010 Cup Final was over.

I think all three can be solid players and contribute this season. I'm expecting ups and downs but that comes with being young and lacking veteran experience. |

I'm expecting Gusty to turn into Erik Karlsson and MAB will make folks forget about Weber.

since there are no other real options, i will say its good that we will have 2-3 young dman trying to proove there worth, you never know what you really have until they spend alot of time on the ice. out of mab, gusty and manning, im going to place my bet with manning that by the end of the season he will be the last rookie dman standing.

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Roster Spot Races -- Bourdon, Gustafsson, Manning - bmeltzer
Nice summary Bill. These are the same sentiments that I have been trying to interject here for months. Bourdon will be a huge asset if he can put the doink problems behind him. He has a great shot that hasn't really been evidenced with the Flyers. Given his strength, he is able to play bigger than his 6' frame.
I agree that Manning can probably use another year (maybe less) with the Phantoms to round out his game. He's the real deal though. To put it in perspective, I think his offensive potential from the blue line is higher than forwards Holmstrom or Testwuide. |

That's bold as he is the least "developed." I like the optimism.
I agree with the idea that we need one more D man. Mezy getting hurt is not a blessing in any way shape or form. However, if/when he comes back in late season. He could be a great addition (like trading for a fresh D man) that could really help the team at that stage of the season. Yes it will take him time to get back to game speed but he will also be fresh and probably damn hungry to get going.
Coburn/Grossman
Timonen/Schenn
Gervias/UFA
MAB/GUS/Lilja (when he returns)
There will be plenty of injuries this year with Grossman and Timonen being suspect. I would add one more veteran body to the mix and call it a day. |
