But if you give too much and don't have enough money for gas, you won't get to where you want to go either

I'm curious to hear you elaborate on yours. Not that i agree or disagree. Just would like to hear more.

I just believe that he's a premium defenseman/a rare breed, who took a lot of public abuse from a couple of meatheads on TSN.

Even though he was utilized as Calgary's top shutdown guy, he's one of the best 2-way defensemen in the league -- who's been stuck on some pretty poopty teams.

we don't know what they are asking for. Unless you're listening in on the phone call between homer and feaster.

Calgary would be foolish to trade him.

If there was no cap I would agree. However at his current cap hit hes not worth the price, IMO. You have to trade valuable assets and take that cap hit on for a player whos on the same level as a Coburn. I'll wait until the trade deadline to upgrade.

Depending on what would make sense for Calgary.

I'd take him at a reasonable cost. He has only this year and next on his cap hit. He's a first pairing d-man, can play shut down, terrific skater, can play the PP, has played every game every season but one, eats minutes.

Great story idea Bill. Always good to remember some of the names of the past.

For me, I would go with Petr Svoboda for #3 over Bladon. Bladon was a better player in terms of stats, no question. And he's probably the consensus pick for most fans. But I always loved Svoboda and the way he played the game, and he's who I think of when I see a #3 Flyers jersey.

I believe that he's a superior player to Coburn. IMO, you would be acquiring a guy who slots in as your #2 this year (with Kimmo still here) and you're #1 next year when Timonen is done.

If Calgary were in rebuilding mode, sure, I could see them trading him.

But they're not. And trading him makes their top-6 laughable.

I generally think of Svoboda as No. 23, although he did wear No. 3 here as well.

He's not all that rare. The league is full of guys like him who never reached the potential their skills indicated they should.

Also, I'm curious - on what are you basing the statement that he's one of the top 2-way defensemen in the league? Just your opinion or do you have some sort of advance stats or something that support that? Because when I look at his traditional stats sure don't support that claim. Not saying he or his stats are horrible, just that they don't support the claim of "one of the best 2-way defenseman".

It's the cost to get him and then the cap hit that worries me. The Flyers could use another defenseman who can skate the puck and play a lot of minutes. I just rather they take the chance on the kids they currently have an upgrade before the deadline if necessary.

25- Zezel over Primeau

55- Primeau over Gratton

Gratton doesnt deserve to be on the list. Especially over PZ's mullet.

Yes, very true. My old age must be catching up with me today.

EDIT: Interesting that Bladon also wore 23 while a Flyer. Wish I could somehow blame that odd fact for my confusion, but sadly, I'm just an idiot.

Let's not make too many excuses for him... his teams haven't been all that bad... Florida and Calgary are/were non-playoff teams but they were consistently hovering around 40-wins and still ending up on the wrong side of the bubble. It's also not like he's been on an island (like Rick Nash)... Bouwmeester's actually had some quality talent to line up with... Iginla, Nieuwendyk, Weiss, Phaneuf, Jokinen, Tanguay, Horton, McCabe among others.

As a guy who was on the ice for 40-50% the time, he rightfully deserves a good share of the responsibility for the fact that not a single one of the NHL team's he's played for has ever made the playoffs... not even once. Even poor Rick Nash has made the playoffs before...

Is he terrible? No. Is he overrated? Probably. Is he a legit #1 guy? Probably not. Is he overpaid? Definitely. Do opponents look forward to playing against him? Peca's the only one to come out and say it, but it's probably not an uncommon sentiment amongst his peers.

"one of the best 2-way defenseman" may have been an overstatement, but I feel like he could be. Basically, I think the skills are there, but he's not being utilized that way.
