Nice blog Bill
Anyone else catch the game 7 vs the bruins from 2010 last night? Really pushed me over the edge for needing hockey to be back and ready to go. I hope this lockout isn't too long... |

Always liked Dave "the Hammer" Shultz and Moose Dupont.

I like the old nicknames so much better. We are in an era where everyone can be a dog or a lo. J-Lo. K-Dog.
Bundy is fat, but also unbiased (as much as it gets) for an announcer.

Are they posting the practice times anywhere? I work 5 minutes away from the skate zone so I'd like to see the boys if possible. - hereticpride
Usually start around 9 AM, I believe.

Most players with even partial First Nation heritage get that nickname at some point.

The Hammer was a media-created nickname for Schultz, although he came to prefer it. He also went by "Zeus" around the Flyers locker room.

Not Flyers related, but I still think Stu Grimson's nickname is the best I've seen.
EDIT - of course, this is coming from a guy called Damian by some on this board. |

Some of the most recent are Car-bomb for Carcillo and Birddog for Hartnell..
I personally love my dads nickname for Dmitry Afanasenkov: Kitchen Sink. It started because I was watching a game and he was reading the paper during one game when he heard Jim Jackson's voice start to raise in volume and tempo (probably a scoring chance). My dad looks up at me (over his glasses and with a smirk) and says.. "Did he just tell me to turn the kitchen sink off?" From that day on, he has been known around my family as "Kitchen Sink"
On my team we have a couple of pretty cool nicknames..
My brother is 6'5 270lbs. He is pretty scary out there on the ice.. but he is a teddy bear. My Dads aunt used to say "That Shawny is as sweet as sugar." His nickname is Shug.
My nickname is wolf, and that goes back to when I was a little kid. I had a tendency to tell stories from time to time.. The little boy who cried... you get the point.
My fiance's brother is nicknamed Carle because of his muffin shot from the point and his #25. |

Everyone calls me Hate Tank LOL
im 6'5'' and 330 -- Not the best skater but I play good D Fence and keep the space in front of the tender open. Usally lead the team in block shoots and Pen Min. Not a good player but I try my best and its damn fun |

I didn't know that it was a media thing. This was before I was old enough to follow hockey as well. |

Being a 19 yr old, I'm too young to remember most of these nicknames. My favorite now probably is Cooter. I think its a good nickname....funny, put perfectly fits the name, ya know?
As for myself, I'm forever immortalized as Mo, being my last name is Mariano. For baseball though, I'm known simply as my number. 6. I don't know why, but I like it and it stuck. Gives you that one extra ego boost of being "associated" with a number, even if its only in a local setting. Unoriginal, but still original |

Favorites?
Well, growing up I idolized the Hound, to me he was a guy who played at 110% effort and made the most of his given talent to make it in the NHL.
After I read your Dvorak stories I also love Cookie now.
Izzy good enough is classic. |
