Good to see Murray picking up where he left off in 1997. |

You mean taking a team to its second conference final in three years and first trip to the Finals in a decade? Yeah, the Phantoms would gladly take it.

Murray has been a head coach for 7 seasons in the NHL since he left Philadelphia in 1997. He has been fired twice, and his teams have either missed the playoffs or been knocked out in the first round every season. Not exactly great success.
LA did look foolish firing him last season, that blew up in their face. |

You are apparently unaware that Murray's post-Flyers jobs were in taking over horrendous teams, which got better under his direction.
There wasn't much anyone could do with the Panthers, but at least he significantly cut down their GAA with his system.
In LA, he took a losing team, taught it how to play defense (maybe excessively so once they got some offensive talent built up to go with it) and basically set the table for the Stanley Cup championship this past season. The team made sure he got a Stanley Cup ring for a reason -- he did a lot of the work that made it all possible.
Ask ANY coach around hockey or ask the majority of Murray's former players once a few years have gone by. The former will tell you that Murray is one of the best in the business and the latter will tell you they learned a lot from him even if they didn't always like his system at the time. |

Great write up, love the Euro updates.
Bill, is there a reason for the Bryz healthy scratches? Is he playing poorly or are they just riding the hot goalie? If he is playing poorly that seems like it could be a concern for Philly if the lockout were to end. |

CSKA never really needed Bryzgalov in the first place. They already have a very good KHL goalie in former Washington Capitals goalie Rastislav Stana. Not sure why they bothered to sign Bryzgalov, except for the international coverage of the press conference to announce that Datsyuk and he had signed there.
Stana has been the best goalie in the KHL this season. Combine that with Bryzgalov being so-so in his four starts -- one poor start, one good one, two uneven ones -- plus the fact that Stana will still be there if/when Bryzgalov leaves upon the settlement of the NHL lockout. It's been a pretty easy decision to keep rolling with Stana.

Blog finally finished. It contains updates on the Phantoms, Titans, all current Flyers in Europe whose teams were in action Saturday (Matt Read) or today (Ilya Bryzalov had another DNP, Wayne Simmonds' game underway now), and all junior and collegiate prospects in action yesterday and/or today.

Impossible. A coach is only any good if his team has won championships and/or if he has an animated demeanor. Likewise, a goalie had an awful game any time he allows more than one goal and a skater contributes nothing if he didn't score. A team has had a failure of a season if it doesn't win the championship.
It's the Angelo Cataldi morning call-in show school of hockey analysis. |
