It boggles my mind how anyone could think this. The owners were more than willing to make concessions on secondary issues like arbitration and years to free agency waaaay back in September.

The only thing Fehr has gained for the players is $300 million in Make Whole, which won't come close to matching the money lost by losing part (or all) of this season.

If I'd gone in an negotiated a package, that said $300M, 5 year contract max, 5% variance, 10 year deal, and then someone comes in, holds a press conference and says we have $300M, now they just have to give us the rest, I'd lose it too. How do you negotiate with someone that pulls stunts like that?

Look at those poll numbers about Bettman, did you ever think you'd see that...someone in hockey against whom Bettman seems great...it's like how by the end of Return of the Jedi you hate the Emperor but see Darth Vader suddenly as an okay guy. It blows my mind, Fehr made Bettman the good guy to hockey fans...simply incredible. After all the millions of times hockey fans have said Bettman doesn't care about hockey, now he cares about it MORE than someone...didn't see that coming

The Owners may have thought they had a deal, but the players didn't. The players are not going to agree on a deal with Fehr present. I wish I could find it again, but there is a statement the NHLPa made before the player-Owner meeting stating that they are not going to agree to a deal without full representation from their legal staff. Ron Hainsey also said the same thing in his statement afterwords.
