You'd have to move over half the teams!
- LeftCoaster

Move the 15 teams losing money to these markets

4 teams in Toronto
3 in MTL
2 more in New York
1 in Chicago
1 in Boston
1 in Vancouver
1 in Philly
1 Qc City

Problem solved

Player made 1.8B last year, owners 281M
- Symba007

Lol weak argument there is roughly 700 players that makes for an average of
Roughly 2.6 million/player.

There are 30 owners.... So that makes roughly an average of
9.25 million/owner

So even after paying all overhead and paying the middle men and puppets, the owners on average are still making 3.5x more than the average player.

Nice to see the frank luntz spin doctor affect working so well

Doesn't cost the PA one cent. That's the problem. They benefit from the jobs yet don't want to help secure it's future. Strange tactic.
- bloatedmosquito

Moving the team increases revenues and salaries. Players make more if the team is in Markham or Quebec City. Owners made the decision to move to Phoenix and pocketed the relocation fee.

How much money did the owners have to put out to make that 9 million? 150 plus million? Only eight of them actually made money, the rest lost even after their 150 million dollar investment. I'd fire my accountant!

I'm just curious, but Ek, have you been right about ANYthing during this process? I am starting to cringe every time I read something hopeful here because this blog has become bizzaro world to the real lockout.

Can I play?

Since 2002/03, NHL revenues have grown from $1.996B to $3.4B.

Players share +13.8%
Owners share. + 238.6 %

- Canada Cup

The percentage change in the players share doesn't look right, but the percentage change in the owners share is believeable. Assuming the players were getting 70% of revenues in 2002-03 (based on most pre-lockout reports, it was around that - whether one believes it or not is open to debate):

2002-03
Players get $1,397.2 million (i.e., about $1.4 billion)
Owners gete other $598.8 million

2011-12 (I'm going to use the $3.303 billion number the NHL and NHLPA both reference)
Players get $1,883 million
Owners get the other $1,420 million

% change, players = 1883 / 1397.2 = 34.76%
% change, owners = 1420 / 598.8 = 237.14%

WOW Ek this board is so very ANTI player it isnt funny. Those who want the players to just sign any deal the owners want is so very selfish, just so you can watch hockey again. The players lose every CBA and I applaud them for hiring a man like Fehr who has gone through this process already with MLB. Fehr has the Ba!!$ to stand up to the owners and grab all he could from them. I applaud the players for hiring him and for standing by his side through this all.

Plus those profits do not accurately reflect the performance of the league as a whole. 3-4 teams greatly influence those stats.

If the owners succeed, and get the players to turn on their union leadership yet again, good luck to the players ever being able to hire someone competent to run their union again. Qualified applicants will avoid them like the plague.

1. Depends on how you define "lose" - because they won some pretty decent concessions back in 2005.

2. The only way you can say the players lost in 1995 was if you say "well, they had to take limits on rookie contracts" which they really didn't have to take - but it took money from younger players who had never laced up their skates for an NHL game and put it in the hands of older guys who had paid their dues in the league for years. Otherwise, when the owners panicked they pretty much rolled over and signed the deal the players wanted.

It's not a question of revenue. It's a question of risk and profit. Players have zero risk all profit. Owners have all risk and the majority see little profit. Aside from the fact that players are employees, if they want the bigger slice of the pie, then they should share in the risk.

So whose argument is weak?
