One constant thread through the last few months, is that the NHL would want to at least salvage a 48 game season.
I don't know about you, but I would not equate a team that wins the Stanley Cup after a 48 game season, with one that was won in the (now) traditional 82 game season. To me it wouldn't mean as much, and I suspect the players would not regard it (a Stanley Cup Win) in the same light either.
An asterisk would be there, regardless if it was visible or not. |

Nobody seems to think the Devils lockout cup win was any less legitimate. |

With that said if there's a shortened season and the Sens win the cup I'll totally say it's a meaningless win just to be a Richard. |

It would not matter if they played 30 games. It means they were the best the league had to offer. I am sure if you asked anyone on the Devils team that won the 48 game season if it meant any less they would tell you no because a win is a win. It doesnt matter by an inch or by a mile. |

It'd be interesting to see if any of the cup winning teams in the last decade or so were out of the playoffs at the 48 game mark that season. I can't imagine any were.
I don't really think it's any less impressive to win in a shortened season than it is to win during an 82 game season. You still have to win 16 games in the playoffs which is pretty damn hard to do. |

Exactly...
As for the 1st part, LA was really close... like 20% chance of making the playoffs at around 140th day of the season.
Pittsburgh in 09 was 30% to make it around 130-135 day of the season.
those are the closest I can see. |

you are wrong. Lots of shortened seasons in all sports or replacement players/refs used like the NFL this year and NBA last season and every one is celebrated like any other season.
Last time for NHL the hockey was intense and every game was important to make the playoffs. |

I thought I put the link in.... Ooops.

I know I didn't do the Pitts one, but I thought I did LA. Oh well.
Doesn't show if they were in/out of playoffs at that time, but 30 & 20% is a pretty good indication of yes/no. |

Didn't even know sportsclub had archives. That's cool, thanks.
So yeah, basically that proved me wrong. That supports the argument that a shortened season cheapens a cup win imo. I still think a cup win is a cup win regardless but knowing some of the recent cup winners likely would not have made the playoffs had they played in a shortened at least makes it a good argument for people who disagree with me. |

Still not with me thought... they fought and clawed their way into the playoffs and won 4 rounds, 16 wins. that doesn't change it for me.
FYI LA at week 16 (58.5% of the year =48/82) were 60% to make it.
It's hard to say how things would change in a shortened season for teams like that. Pitts on 09. They went through a down time in the middle that cause them to fall out and they eventually changed their coach. If they were only playing 48 games maybe they don't hit that skid in the middle. Who knows. |

No, I wouldn't.
Winning the Cup after a 48 game season, is not equal to a team winning it after an 82 game season. It's not "a true measure" of a team, and all that goes into a full season and playoffs.

It's my opinion, explain how I'm wrong?
You can disagree with me, as you automatically do with any I post, but you're opinion can't be wrong, and neither can mine.
example: I support Bill C-377............so you HAVE to take the opposite position by default. |
